Tencent just started a micro film contest in China trying to get some hot cakes out of the general public.
Micro films are complete stories with generally short length (30sec-300sec), short production timespan (1-7 days or several weeks), and small capital investment (typically less than ten thousand dollars), and they are made especially for playing on the new media platforms and in mobile situations for short time viewing. The themes of micro films range from humor to fashion, education to business, etc.; and micro films can be made into singles or series.
The named "1st ever micro film" IMC case was "Touch and Go" released on Dec.27, 2010. It was a commercial for Cadillac starring hot Asian star Daniel Wu. In its 90 seconds timespan, the film showed a story of high-tech business deal in dangerous situations with plots and details as well as special effects. It has lead to the emerging of bountiful micro films. I tried to investigate into the title of "1st micro film" to see if it is really the first, and came up with the conclusion that although the idea may not be absolutely authentic, it was probably the 1st to name itself as micro film that become widely publicized and started a new era of micro films. (To view this film, since it's so 'micro', click on http://v.youku.com/v_show/id_XMjMyODA2Mzg0.html)
However, the 1st micro film was not cheap at all. Instead, it is one of the most expensive productions per second in film history with its total investment over RMB100,000,000 (about $16,000,000). Wow, that's a LOT of money! Fortunately, most follower-ups are devoted to make micro films cheap and easy, and produced some popular pieces that are widely watched online.
The future of micro film is projected to be good. It can increase the total population of film watchers, and generate more opportunities for novice artists, and more importantly, it embraces the commercial ideas directly compared with that of conventional commercial implantation. It is the right product to match the emerging media and satisfy the time starving audience and society.
