On Mar 22, I interviewed Yiting, a former grad student in my program. We talked about her current job, her past experience, comm industry trend, and suggestions on how to make a career in this industry.
Yiting is now working for a local online marketing agency company. Coincidentally, her major job duties are very similar to the book I recently did a review about " Marketing in the Age of Google". She does a lot of SEO for the company, and manages the blog and initiates webinars, etc. Overall, she is doing stuff that are really specific and demands relative comm skills on a higher level.
I was curious on how she could secure a position as an international in a field that is heavy on language. But her rich experience and academic background explained so much to me during our conversation.
When asked about the industry trend, Yiting thought that the industry has "overstressed" the importance of social media, and made it "over independent". I kinda agree with her thinking based on my limited knowledge so far. I agree with her that all media should be more integrated for a better outcome in marketing. That kinda goes back to the idea of IMC, which has been pretty popular in recent years, and I'm longing to learn more about it.
Tips she gave to novice practitioners are focused on three key terms: integration, conversation (relationship), and storytelling. Together they can better aid our practice in the industry.
It was a great interview with Yiting, both professionally and personally.
