The recent news released that many of the major sales channels of Apple iPad had halted selling iPad in China. The reason should be mostly the loss in the trademark infringement case of Apple Inc. against Weiguan Shenzhen.
Simply looking at the title of the news, I automatically connected it with the recent coverage of the poor working condition in FoxConn where iPads are manufactured. I thought it was a boycott against the product for better working conditions for those workers, but after I read into the story, I found something totally expected.
I felt amazed to learn that Apple is not the trademark holder for its product iPad in China. I wonder whatever happened that made Weiguan Shenzhen the trademark owner for iPad, and now has the right to demand the Chinese customs to stop importing and exporting of iPad, and stop the sales in major distribution channels.
Now that Apple is suing again to try to get the trademark back, and that will take sometime before the judgement will be done. During this period of time, I wonder what will happen to the sales of iPad in China. And also I wonder how much is the sales portion of Chinese market for iPad, and how will that figure impact the manufacturing of iPads in FoxConn and how will that in return impact the workers. Will some of the workers be laid off if the manufacture gets cut?
Being a novice in the emerging media business and academic world, I personally have concerns beyond just how the industry itself operates, I also care about the whole chain behind it and I'm hoping things will work out well for everyone.
